What is Bhutan Tourism Corporation Ltd. (BTCL)?
Bhutan Tourism Corporation Ltd. is the oldest and the most experienced of the kingdom's agencies, for over 25 years. It evolved out of Bhutan Tourism Corporation, established in 1974 when the country opened its doors to tourism, an occasion that commenced with the coronation of the fourth king of Bhutan.
What is the relationship between BTCL and Far Fung Places?
In 1996 Bhutan Tourism Corporation Ltd. asked Far Fung Places LLC, a private U.S. travel company, to represent them in the USA, and create a website for Bhutan, to educate the traveling public on this little-known kingdom in the Himalayas. At that time there were fewer than 10,000 visitors to Bhutan yearly. Kathleen Fung and Dennis Keser, both principals of Far Fung Places and passionate about Bhutan, began to create and market Bhutan programs through Bhutan Tourism Corporation Ltd. Their longer two and three week programs to Bhutan became their trademark.
Fast forward to the present. Today Bhutan is considered one of the top travel destinations with over 100,000 visitors annually. Presently there are over 1000 registered Bhutan travel agencies marketing directly to travelers. Within this competitive climate, Bhutan Tourism Corporation Ltd. still stands as one of the leaders among the Bhutanese agencies, with its own managed hotels, private guides and drivers, a fleet of cars, vans, and coaches, ticketing services.
Far Fung Places continues to webmaster the Kingdom of Bhutan website as well as offer advice to travelers to assist BTCL in selecting the travel program that suits them best. However, travelers taking BTCL trips will book directly with BTCL, which will then handle the custom itinerary, pre-trip information, visa formalities, Druk Air flights, and hotel bookings.
